The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is the major professional certification of the internal audit profession. There were 77,000 CIAs around the world according to the 2008-2009 IIA Annual Report.
Each section of the CIA consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, which take approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete:
- Part 1 - Internal Audit Activity's Role in Governance, Risk, and Control
- Part 2 - Conducting the Internal Audit Engagement
- Part 3 - Business Analysis and Information Technology
- Part 4 - Business Management Skills
If you already have a professional certification, then part 4 will more than likely be waived. Consult the IIA Headquarters to determine if your certification qualifies for the Part 4 exemption.
